Choosing A Good Tax Preparer

Right now is the holiday season and although income taxes may be the last thing you are thinking about, you may already be expecting a refund and are running low on money. Though you may be spending money on gifts and seasonal decor and are not be thinking of your taxes, There are a few things you should know in order to choose a preparer that is perfect for you. Though you may think all tax services and preparers are the same, they are not.  Here are some things you can do to choose an income tax preparer that is sufficient for your tax needs.

1. Ask them how long they have been doing taxes
2. Ask them how long thier company has been in business
3. Ask them if they have a PTIN # with the IRS
4. Ask about the company policies to secure your personal information
5. Ask about federal taxes, credits and deductions you may be eligible for
6. Ask them how best to report the type(s) of income you have to report
7. Ask for a rough estimate, though not exact of how much you can expect to be refunded or paid
8. Ask about how they can assist you with an audit or help if you have IRS issues
9. Ask questions about your tax liability and if there are things you can do to minimize liabilities
10. If at any point you don’t feel comfortable ask further questions
